It’s that time of year again – the holidays are fast approaching! Soon you’ll be eating, relaxing, spending time with friends and family and… selling your house!?
Homeowners may wonder if they should bother putting their home on the market during the holiday season (November to January) and some may not have a choice. Selling during this time is not ideal, but ‘tis the season of looking on the bright side! Selling your home during the holidays can have a few advantages, two of them being, less competition and serious buyers. Unless looking at homes is someone’s hobby, there’s a good chance that anyone looking during the holidays, has the potential of being a serious buyer.
Now that we have you thinking on the bright side, here are a few tips that will help you present your home in the best light during this special time of year.
To Decorate or Not to Decorate
It’s always best to play it safe with decor when trying to sell your home during the holidays. We aren’t saying go all “Grinchy”, just be sure to keep the potential buyer in mind. This means choosing general winter decorations – nothing that will align with a specific religion. Going this route might lessen the risk of turning a buyer off due to distractions.
Hire a Reliable Real Estate Agent
Make sure you aren’t partnering with an agent who goes MIA for the holidays. You need someone who will go above and beyond to sell your home. Looking for the right agent can take a while so make sure you give yourself time to research the agent’s credentials and references.
Seek Out Motivated Buyers
We mentioned that anyone looking for a home during the holidays is most likely a serious buyer. Target those who are on a tight timeline, for example, someone who sold their home quicker than expected and needs to move before their short-term lease is up. A good, well-chosen real estate agent should be able to find these types of buyers.
Make Curb Appeal a Top Priority
For those of you living in the colder states, make sure you are keeping up with the snow and ice. If you are tight on time, it might be wise to hire a snowplow service. Don’t forget to shovel and salt the walkways and take care of any icicles that may accumulate on the gutters. These may seem obvious but can be easy to overlook during this busy time of year. Not to mention, icicles are usually considered a sign of poor attic insulation and ventilation, yikes!
