Clean Everything… Then Clean it, Again!

A deep clean before putting your home on the market will not only help it shine, but it will make tidiness easier to maintain between showings. Yes, it’s a lot of work but the return on investment to properly prepare your home for sale is huge!

Here are some power-cleaning tips to try:

Windows:Wash your windows and screens. This lets more light into the interior and dirty windows are a turn off. Clean dust and grime from the blinds and window sills.

Walls:A fresh coat of paint is of course the best option when needed. But when there’s no time or budget for painting, then a thorough cleaning is essential. Grease, smoke, fingerprints and dust can adhere to walls and make even the best decorating look dingy. Resist the temptation to spot-clean since it will make the rest of the wall look dirtier. Clean walls using a general-purpose cleaner diluted with hot water. Start at the top corner of the wall to avoid drips. Don’t forget the trim, baseboards and doors.

Bathrooms:Clean all tile and grout. Reseal the grout if necessary so it stays clean for a long time. Get rid of any mold and mildew on walls, ceilings and window sills. Polish the mirror until it sparkles. Sprucing up the faucets will do wonders. Those original one-handled clear plastic faucet handles can get dingy over time from hard water deposits or regular daily use. You can get replacements at a home store for a few dollars, or if they’re in good shape, save money by removing them (all it takes is a screwdriver) and giving them a soak in vinegar and a good scrubbing with an old toothbrush. You’ll be surprised at how well they’ll shine and gleam. Scrub and disinfect every part of the toilet.

 

Kitchen:The refrigerator is the most common source of kitchen smells.
Throw out any old food. Scrub the inside of the fridge with a baking soda and water solution. Keep an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator to continue to absorb odors over time. Clean exterior of the refrigerator including the handles and bottom grill.

Other tasks on the clean kitchen hit list:

  1. Scrub and polish countertops, sinks and faucets.
  2. Clean cabinets inside and out and on top.
  3. Take stove top apart, remove knobs and clean thoroughly.
  4. Clean the inside of the stove and open oven door and broiler/drawer to clean ledges.
  5. Clean the microwaveinside and out.
  6. Wipe and polish chairs, table tops, hutches, etc.
  7. Wash the baseboards.
  8. Remove dirt and grimeand wax wood floors.
  9. Remove dirt, scuffs and stains from linoleum or vinyl floors.

Outside:

It’s amazing the difference a clean and tidy entryway makes to your home’s curb appeal. Wipe down your front door, clean or replace the doormat, and make sure dust and dirt haven’t collected on outdoor furniture. Use a pressure washer to give your driveway, siding and garage a good cleaning.
